HMS Triton Six Gun Frigate is a 3D model of a cross section of an 18th century British warship—a sixth-rate frigate. A sixth-rate frigate carries 28 guns and has a crew of 150 to 240 sailors. The model is based on plans by Chuck Passaro at the Nautical Research Build website/forum. The model was built in Autodesk Maya starting in late 2018 and it was traced in Maya's modeling section through a meticulous process of working and reworking.
As this model only represents a smaller cross section, many of the larger details like the bow and stern are not included. Instead the project focuses on the shorter version and includes as much detail as possible. Detailed items include four cannons on the gun deck, tables with dishes and plates on the mess deck, a large cavernous cargo hold, a center column, a walkway up on top, among others. The project took a long time to create, as well as to texture. The model is also animated to see some of the up close details that are included. A flythrough of the inside shows the amount of parts that make up the model.
The animations include the different stages of the rendering process. Included are Ambient Occlusion and AI Standard, as well as fully textured versions of the finished model.
James Zilvitis is currently earning his BFA in Digital Media & Design with a focus on 3D animation and modeling at UConn Stamford. He has a background in graphic design and multimedia. He also works with traditional plastic modeling which has greatly influenced his current studies. The majority of his 3D work is in modeling but he is also interested in animation and photography. He primarily utilizes AutoDesk Maya, but also uses Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro and After Effects when creating his projects. Following graduation, he hopes to work for a studio that specializes in 3D modeling for animation and to continue to learn new and exciting tools for his personal growth.
